New York State Small Business Development Center

Through a network of 24 regional centers, the New York State Small Business Development Center delivers free business counseling and training to New York residents who want to start a business or improve the performance of an existing business. You can make an appointment here or even ask a question online. The SBDC also offers a number of specialty programs for:

Minority and Women Entrepreneurs
Small businesses with 8(a) or Minority Women Business certification can take advantage of opportunities that level the playing field within the private and public sector. With certification, minority and women-owned firms capable of producing quality products and services at competitive prices have a more competitive position. Neither 8(a) nor MWBE certification is a guarantee for business, but if used as a marketing tool, can generate more opportunities to bid for business.

International Business Development
If you own a company in New York and would you like to enter and expand your business in some of the largest and fastest developing countries in the world, the IBD can help. The IBD organizes and provides a variety of training sessions, seminars, round-table discussions, featured conferences and other activities that focus on latest trade/business information, opportunities, challenges, practices, and exchange involved in international business and trade development.

Veterans Business Programs
The NYS SBDC Veterans’ Business Outreach Program and the Veterans Services and Assistance Program work in coordination to provide targeted training, counseling, and mentoring to help veterans start and grow a small business. The Veterans Business Advisors provide:

  • One-to-one advisement sessions
  • Pre-business plan workshops/training
  • Business concept assessment
  • Business plan development assistance
  • Comprehensive feasibility analyses
  • Business-to-business commerce
  • Assistance with funding sources

SBDC Technology Services
The NYS SBDC helps small business owners transfer ideas into products and services, whether you want to work on carburetors, computer chips, or capillaries. If you have an invention but are not sure how to bring it to the market place, the SBDC can help.

Selling to the Government
The NYS SBDC offers services to businesses that are interested in selling to local, state and federal government organizations. These services are provided at no charge to small businesses, including women-owned and minority-owned businesses throughout the state. SBDC assistance includes identifying markets, providing group training, and offering access to a reference library of publications including the Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR).
